T
he church of St. Martin in Ougy is first mentioned in 1095.
It was briefly parish church of Malay in 1775. Its foundation was probably linked
to the neighbouring manor of uxelles. This little vaulted structure, built in the 12th century, is similar to the churches at Taize, Ameugny, Confrancon, Chissey, La Chapelle-sous-Brancion ect. With an almost austere restraint (South doorway, North wall without doorway), it is a structure built in the Cistercian style of the mid-12th century. The narrow vertical belfry is surpported by a false door on the choir vaulting. It is surmounted by a stone spire. The belfries of Chazelle, Chissey, Taize, and Mazille are in the same style. The vaulted roof of soapstone, is 18th century. |

S
ights : - Outside, notice the rough stones: blocks of sandstone incorporated into the limestone structure which was formerly used for knife-sharpening. (Notice the many grooves). - Inside, behind the West doorway, a miniature portrait of St. Philippe (end of the 12th century). Funeral mask bearing the coat-of-arms of the Marquis of Ble d'Uxelles, the Lords of Cormatin. All the ancient statuary has been stolen: Saint-Antoine (16th century), Saint-Martin (16th century), Saint-François of Assisi (17th century). |
